Ever since I saw Doris Day play Carol Templeton, an advertising executive on Madison Avenue in the movie "Lover Come Back," I knew my calling. Marketing. I may have entered the profession solely based on the fact Doris Day/Carol Templeton wore the wackiest hats to match her suit, gloves and handbag which is really ironic because the company I represent does not allow the wearing of hats in their dress code. Nonetheless, at nine years old I thought her style, chutzpah, and envelope purse slapped under her arm as she abruptly left a room were who I fancied myself to be when I grew up.
My career has evolved over the years from marketing to business development, and it takes me all over the country. Just this past week I spent several days in Washington, DC. And although this blog is dedicated to the blessings we enjoy in middle Tennessee, don't be surprised if some posts are completely random. For example, for the next few days I'll share some of my pictures and experiences from Washington, all with a Tennessee connection.
The convention I was attending was held in a hotel in the heart of DC, and my room had a view of the White House. No wonder on our first break, I changed into tennis shoes and walked the block to see the home of our nation's President. To my surprise I was greeted in the park in front of the White House by a monument to our country's seventh President, Andrew Jackson from the great state of Tennessee.
How many other Tennesseans and Tennessee connections would I encounter in our nation's capital?
Plenty.
I love my job, even if I can't wear wacky hats while I work. I'm still known to slap an envelope purse under my arm as I leave a room abruptly. Thank you Doris for that move. It's very empowering!
