Well, I did something today I haven't done in nearly 40 years. I defrosted my refrigerator. Yes, I had noticed the ice maker wasn't making ice about a month ago, which was the first tell-tale sign of old age. But much like moving towards bi-focal glasses or purchasing a box of "Nice and Easy" to cover a few gray roots, I knew there could be an easy fix. I could simply purchased ice cube trays.
However, just this past week I noticed the food in the freezer wasn't frozen. Yikes! This tell-tale sign was more urgent and required immediate attention. Is it time for a new fridge?
Instead I decided to buy some more time for my old friend. I took everything out of the freezer and stored it in the refrigerator. Then put towels inside the refrigerator and inside the freezer. I remember my mother putting a bowl of hot water in the freezer, so I did that, too, but I didn’t really use it. Instead I grabbed a large, metal spoon and began scrapping off ice. Thank goodness I was not electrocuted!!! I could not get to the plug to unplug the appliance.
With several trips to the sink to empty the bin in the bottom of the freezer that filled with ice shavings, the freezer was beginning to look ‘normal’ again. But will it freeze? Time will tell. Maybe I bought some more time for my frozen food, however most is in the trash.
To be on the safe side, I think it’s time to start shopping. Retro Red Northstar model, maybe? Hmmmmmm……
