My sweet friend and true southern belle Kathie invited me to the afternoon garden tea party hosted by the Athenaeum for the students at the 1861 Girls School, their families and other guests. I was thrilled to be invited and in complete awe of the lovely ladies in their hoop skirts, hats, fans and gloves.
The afternoon festivities included a tour of the Athenaeum, tea and dainties served on the lawn, a horse-drawn carriage ride, and introductions to all the guests... most in 1861 attire and some portraying real local residents from the mid-nineteenth century.
Columbia, Tennessee, is the home of the Athenaeum and hosts numerous events throughout the year where both men and women can embrace their southern heritage and honor the Bonnie Blue by dressing in mid-nineteenth century clothing, speaking in the period venacular, as well as participating in the customary dances, games and other recreational pursuits from this bygone era.
The girls at the 1861 Girls School learn mid-nineteenth century pursuits for young ladies like riding side saddle, needlepoint, and dancing. In the spring an 1861 Ladies Weekend is offered to those past their teens.
Many Columbia residents have costumes made where others rent their attire from Tammy Hatcher at Southern Belles and Beaus.
