If you know me, you know how much I love animals. Is it a wonder I love this little town called Columbia?
Above is a poignant photo of early 1900's Columbia, featuring the "Horse and Mule Spa."
This elegant watering facility for four-legged animals traveling to town was located on the east side of the Maury County Courthouse, facing the Duck River. Within months of this photo, the "Spa" was filled in and paved over, to make way for the new automobiles (visible in the photo).
The history-lover in me wishes we could replace the spa, but even the animal-lover in me knows there aren't many calls for refreshing horses and mules in downtown any more.
Thanks to the Maury County Archives for this great piece of history!
