To imagine April in the 1940s, all you have to do is watch the Fred Astaire/Judy Garland movie Easter Parade.
It was the highest grossing musical of 1948 and the most financially successful movie for both Fred Astaire and Judy Garland. But the plot takes place in 1912, so to get a better picture of April in the 1940s, you'll have to go back a little further and watch the movie Holiday Inn from 1942.
Most folks think of Holiday Inn as a Christmas movie, but it takes the viewer through a year in the life of Bing Crosby and Marjorie Reynolds. And the Irving Berlin song Easter Bonnet is prominent in both movies.
You'll be the grandest lady in the Easter parade.
I'll be all in clover and when they look you over,
I'll be the proudest fellow in the Easter parade.
And you'll find that you're in the rotogravure.
Oh, I could write a sonnet about your Easter bonnet,
And of the girl I'm taking to the Easter parade.
Who wouldn't want to don a new frock, gloves, and an Easter bonnet?
I hope to see your photo in the rotogravure!!
Sending you wishes for a blessed Easter!
