I'll be honest. March is not my favorite month. In fact, it's my least favorite. It's duplicitous, all promises of warmth and spring and maybe even Easter when in reality, March is one of our snowiest months here in middle Tennessee. The deepest one-day snow ever recorded in Nashville was 17 inches on March 17, 1892. Then there was that terrible March storm in 1993 when the Storm of the Century dumped 30 inches of snow in Gatlinburg during spring break. Mount LeConte recorded 60 inches. It was scary how quickly the storm formed and without much warning. Students had to be rescued from the frozen trails.
So, is March simply the price we have to pay to reach April, warmth, and spring? I used to think so. But I'm going to take charge and redefine March and take it back.
Reasons to love March...
Enjoying more daylight since Daylight Saving Time starts March 11. Sunset will be after 7pm.
Cooking with my two of my favorite veggies in season: Asparagus and Leeks
Ok, this is a stretch, but watching "Little Women," the story of the March family. Also marking my calendar for the PBS special premiering May 18.
Renewing my Fishing License
Loving the Tulips, Daffodils, and Hyacinths in bloom. This photo is from my grandmother's house nearly 50 years ago.
Welcoming allergy season in style. I love Vintage Hankies! And one of the few items still affordable at the antique stores.
Waking to the songs of birds chirping instead of my dogs barking to go out.
Hoping to spend some birthday money on a new spring fragrance, maybe even Lily of the Valley.
Sitting in the Front Porch Swing, if this little Diva will share
Hanging Linens on the Clothesline
Making Chocolate Pots de Crème in the set I purchased in Natchez during spring pilgrimage a few years ago. Recipe here.
Practicing my Pout. You never know when you may get an invitation to a spring barbeque at Twelve Oaks.
Decorating for Easter or maybe cuddling a baby duck.
Other ideas I'm considering are visiting The Hermitage. Andrew Jackson's birthday was in March. I may decorate for Mule Day.
Do I want to plant a garden this year? Time to plan.
What makes March special for you?
"Be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead."

1. LAURA LANFORD DEMO AND WORKSHOP, March 22 and 23
Laura Lanford Fine Art
Painting from Photographs…..Anything Goes Workshop
March 22-23, 2018
Laura Lanford is a highly sought-after painting instructor, and we are so fortunate to host her in Spring Hill for an evening demo and one-day workshop.
Laura is a representational artist who is inspired to capture the drama of light and shadow. She loves capturing scenes from ordinary life using dynamic color and energetic brushwork. She paints in several genres including cityscapes, landscapes, still life and figurative work.
She has always had a love of art and studied graphic design/illustration at Auburn University. Laura has studied with gifted artists: Joan Tysinger, JoAnn Williams Walker, Guido Frick, Bill Davidson, Nancy Franke and Anne Blair Brown. However, she considers James Richards to be her professional mentor. Laura teaches oil painting at J. Richards Gallery as well as professional workshops around the Southeast.
“Painting from Photographs….Anything Goes Workshop” will begin with a Thursday night demo. Laura will demonstrate her process of how to capture light and shadow with six simple values, 6-9pm. On Friday, Laura will work individually with each student to help expand their knowledge of painting from photographs. 10am-4:30pm.
Students can paint any subject matter from life or a photograph that interests them. Learn how to manipulate photos and prevent the pitfalls that photos cause in painting. Composition, value, temperatures, color, texture and edges will all be addressed. Some painting experience required. Professional Level Beginner to Intermediate.
Offered by Spring Hill Parks and Rec, the workshop fee is $150. Students bring their own supplies and a list will be provided. Contact Susan Jones for more information or to register, 615-668-8263. Space is limited.
I'm thrilled my students' paintings are on display at Square Market Café on the public square in downtown Columbia, Tennessee, through March 5.
My new paintings will be on display from March 5 through April 9. Make your plans to enjoy a delicious lunch or supper and see the exhibit.
3. THE RUSTY RAKE LAWN & GARDEN SHOW, BARN AT RIPPAVILLA, SPRING HILL, TN
I plan to demonstrate painting in the Spring Hill Parks and Rec booth at the Rusty Rake Lawn & Garden Show. Tickets are $5 for the show, or $10 for the show and tour of the mansion.
4. YEAR OF THE DOG PET PORTRAITS
I never need a reason to love my furbabies or to raise money for my favorite animal rescues, but when I learned we are entering the Year of the Dog why not combine the two and offer a deal on commissioned pet portraits? For the remainder of this year, I plan to offer pet portrait commissions at $50 off my regular fee. Plus, 10% of the sales price will be donated to the animal rescue of your choice.
To get started, simply email a photo to me that you would like painted to email@example.com and I'll respond with a custom quote.
And feel free to call me if you have any questions, 615-668-8263.
Pet Portraits make excellent gifts!!

Today in class we are using complimentary color underpaintings. I love the results!
We started by first blocking in the basic shapes.
And then began filling in the complimentary color, that is the color opposite the local color on the color wheel.
Then, we scrubbed in the basic color and added details.
